Physio Led Fall Prevention Classes

Classes Start Tuesday 6th October 2026, 12-1pm

AMT Physiotherapy is delighted to be invited to deliver Physiotherapist-led fall prevention classes for local charity Building Self-Belief CIO, as part of their Enriching Later Life programme of activities. The sessions are FREE to clients, as they are funded by Building Self-Belief.

Why Fall Prevention?

Fall Prevention Classes are a great way to increase strength and confidence and act as a means to PREVENT falls. Falling can have a terrible impact on people's lives and preventing falls is a far better way to stay healthy and well.

The Classes

Fall Prevention Classes are structured exercise and education programmes designed to reduce falls risk, improve physical function and help older adults maintain independence.

Why Physio led?

The role of a physiotherapist in delivering such classes is important because they can:

  • Assess falls risk

  • Develop individualised exercises

  • Improve gait and mobility

  • Teach safe strategies

  • Address fear of falling – gradually building confidence with challenging but safe activities.

  • Progress exercises – increasing difficulty as strength, balance and confidence improve.

  • Identify other risk factors – and signpost patients for appropriate assessment of vision, medication, footwear or home hazards where necessary.

Typical class activities

  1. Warm-up and mobility exercises

  2. Sit-to-stand practice

  3. Lower-limb strengthening

  4. Static and dynamic balance exercises

  5. Stepping in different directions

  6. Walking and turning exercises

  7. Functional activities such as reaching or negotiating obstacles

  8. Cool-down and education

Why they are important

As a physiotherapist, the key principle is I will provide  individualised and progressive exercises that should be challenging enough to improve your strength and balance while being appropriate for the your abilities and medical needs.

The Venue

Classes will be delivered at Building Self-Belief's large community room. It is the perfect location as it used to be a dance school, and therefore the floors are perfect for classes, and there are still large mirrors and balance bars in place that can be utilised as part of the session.

Date

The first session is 12-1pm on Tuesday the 6th October. The classes are weekly and refreshments will be provided. Time will be allocated at the end of the session so I can have an opportunity to discuss any individual questions and give advice, if requested. For the first session, we are just asking people to turn up on the day, and enjoy the activities. We want people to have fun and enjoy being part of a new group!

I look forward to seeing you soon!
